There are a number of small businesses in the canal corridor that contribute to the economy of the town already and provide a small number of jobs for local people. These should be supported and encouraged to stay in the area. To do this there needs to be small decent affordable mixed use units on the site. We propose that these should be on Edward Street to the rear of the main brewery building. There is currently a shortage of such units south of the river.
We have calculated, by using similar techniques to commercial developers that our plan would create up to 350 jobs. These would be in retail, offices, small business units and leisure. As well as these opportunities there would be scope to develop expertise in town in environmental construction and renewable energy. A gap in the local economy recently identified by the Lancaster Vision Board.
